Guide Point Diagnostics Laboratory

Our Laboratory located in Orji, Owerri North provides diagnostic tests in Biochemistry, Haematology, and Microbiology to clients across Nigeria.

The Increasing importance of Medical Laboratory Service in Nigeria.

Medical laboratory services are crucial in Nigeria for disease diagnosis, treatment monitoring, and prevention, as they provide essential, objective data for healthcare decisions across all levels of care. They improve patient outcomes by enabling early detection, preventing disease progression, and reducing healthcare costs through accurate and timely diagnoses. These services are a foundational element of the Nigerian healthcare system, supporting both individual patient care and public health initiatives.

OUR SERVICES

Microbiology:

Bacteriology

Examinations start with the collection of samples, which can originate from multiple sites on the human body or from medical equipment.

Our team perform Microscopy Culture and Sensitivity (MCS) tests first off which involve growing bacteria in specialized media to allow for their identification and characterization. Microbial identification is performed manually using growth morphology, staining, and biochemical test.

Antimicrobial susceptibility is performed according using disc diffusion tests to help identify the sensitivity or resistance of bacteria to different antibiotics.

Mycological examination:

Mycology examinations utilise microscopy and culture techniques to aid in the identification of pathogenic moulds and yeast. Fungal infections due to Aspergillus, Candida, Pneumocystis, and Cryptococcus are the leading causes of morbidity and mortality especially among individuals with a weakened immune system due to advanced human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) disease, cancers, chemotherapy, diabetes mellitus, and other underlying disorders.  Fungal organisms can be inhaled, ingested or acquired through trauma to the body. The WHO published a priority list of fungal pathogens in 2022 to guide research development and public health action. The most common fungal tests we perform are on ear swabs, hair and nails and skin scrapings.

Parasitological examination

Most parasitic diseases occur due to poor hygiene. The spread and present distribution of many parasites throughout the world is largely due to human activities. Our parasitological examinations are performed by our very experienced medical scientists, using a formalin-ethyl acetate sedimentation concentration technique and microscopy to aid in the real time identification of gastrointestinal parasites. Urine microscopy for Schistosoma spp. and Sellotape slides for Enterobius vermicularis are also performed.

Biochemistry

Biochemistry labs perform tests like liver function tests (ALT, AST, bilirubin), kidney function tests (BUN, creatinine), lipid panels (cholesterol, triglycerides), and glucose tests to diagnose and manage diseases. Justifications include using these tests to screen for conditions, diagnose diseases, monitor treatment effectiveness, and assess the prognosis of diseases. They help doctors understand what's happening inside the body by analyzing bodily fluids like blood and urine.

Hormone profile

A hormonal profile test is a series of blood tests that measure the levels of various hormones to assess overall health, especially reproductive and thyroid health. These tests can help diagnose issues like fertility problems, menstrual irregularities, and conditions such as Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS). Key hormones tested include estrogen, progesterone, follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH),Prolactin, luteinizing hormone (LH), and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH).

Haematology

A hematology test is a blood test that analyzes blood, blood-forming organs, and blood diseases, commonly used to diagnose conditions like anemia, infection, bleeding or clotting disorders, and certain cancers. The most common type is a complete blood count (CBC), which measures the levels of white and red blood cells, and platelets. Other tests include Prothrombin Time (PT) and Partial Thromboplastin Time (PTT) to evaluate blood clotting. Others include ESR, Blood group, Genotypeetc.
